Dimas Tadeu Covas, Director, Instituto Butantan
Graduated in Medicine from the University of São Paulo (1981), Master’s degree in Medicine from the University of São Paulo (1986), Doctorate in Medicine from the University of São Paulo (1993) and Free Teaching from the same university in 1999. He is currently a Permanent Professor at the Ribeirão Preto Medical School of the University of São Paulo; Director of Butantan Institute; President of the Ribeirão Preto Hemocenter Foundation; which is responsible for transfusion care in a geographical area with 4 million inhabitants; Coordinator of the Center for Cell-based Therapy (CTC-CEPID-FAPESP) and Coordinator of the National Institute and Stem Cell Science and Technology (INCTC). Full Member of the Technical Chamber of Hematology and Hemotherapy of the Federal Council of Medicine; Full Member of Advisory Board of the Strategic Committee on Transplantation and Organ Donation Matters of the Ministry of Health; Full Member of the Technical Chamber of the Blood and Blood Products Coordination of the Ministry of Health; Full Member of the Advisory Board of the Ribeirão Preto Technology-Based Business Incubator; and Full Member of the Board of Trustees of the USP College Entrance Examination Foundation (FUVEST). He is a Haematologist and Hemotherapist and develops research on the following subjects: molecular and cellular biology, stem cells, erythrocyte and platelet antigens, viruses (HIV and HTLV), heterologous protein expression in cellular systems in vitro. It has 5 patents filed in Brazil and one abroad. He was State Coordinator of the HemoRede of the State of São Paulo. He was a member of the Brazilian Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy and the Brazilian College of Hematology and is currently the President of the Brazilian Association of Hematology and Hemotherapy. He was a full member of CTNBio from 2008 to 2011. He is an associate editor of the Brazilian Journal of Hematology and Hemotherapy and Academic Editor of PLOsOne magazine. He was one of the founders of the Brazilian School of Hematology. He is a member of the Ribeirão Preto Academy of Sciences. He works in the area of science dissemination and basic education, having organized postgraduate courses for teachers and students of elementary and high school and founded the House of Science of Hemocenter/CEPID/FAPESP. He won the Jabuti Award from the Brazilian Book Chamber in 2007 with the book: Stem Cells – The New Frontier of Medicine. He is deputy coordinator of the Postgraduate Course in Oncology and Cell Therapy at Ribeirão Preto Medical School – USP and Coordinator of the Professional Master’s Program in Hemotherapy and Biotechnology. Since March 2017 he is the Director of the Butantan Institute in São Paulo.
